Post Re: Cavalier's Art Resources
Oh my, I think I love you...

I actually have some ghibli stuff I could scan as well, as I'm sure a lot of them aren't online... but I really would hate to scan my nicely kept books. That, and my mother would probably kill me if I attempted it, lol. :O Yay, though! I'm glad to see another ghibli fan!

I'm glad you like the material. ;) I'm hesitant to scan some of my artbooks as well, but there are some images that I really want to get out to people. Particularly from some of my older artbooks.

If you like the Ghibli stuff (and almost everyone here seems to) I'll get acrackin' on posting some more, because the "Ghibli Vault" goes very deep. Thanks for your interest, and look for more updates soon, perhaps this afternoon.

Posted some new material. Some Nauasicaa artbook scans, as well as some stuff from Yoshiyuki Amano which is really mind blowing. Enjoy everybody.

Post Re: Cavalier's Art Resources
Wow, I'm still going through all of them, but the English translation of what Miyazaki said about this one just really struck me! I have to type it out for some reason~

Quote:
"I drew this picture while I was working for a studio called Telecom. I didn't have any work in animation for a while, so I started drawing Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in Animage, but almost immediately afterward I got a job doing Sherlock Hound. I despise people who earn money on the side in addition to their main occupation. Yet I was forced to do exactly that, serializing the manga while reporting for duty at the studio--a dissociative state of affairs.

"It was standard operating practice at Telecom to work till after midnight, but I used to sneak out around 11pm., worried that people would notice me leaving early, and drive home, switching my brain over to Nausicaa. Then I would sit at my desk in the middle of the night, desperately drawing manga pages and cursing. Then in the morning I would put my brain back on Sherlock Hound as I drove to the studio. I did this every day. While I was working at the studio I behaved as if I'd never heard of Nausicaa. If I saw a copy of Animage lying around I would flee the room.

"Link this picture, every illustration that appeared on the magazine's cover still embarrasses me to death for all kinds of reasons. But the primary purpose of a cover illustration is to attract the readers attention. I never once had any intention of earning a living doing that kind of work, bit I found myself forced to produce that kind of work regardless. Because of this I feel a sort of submissive shame toward those picture."

It's so bizarre and amazing, ...and humanizing... to read about an artist and creator I respect so much talk about his art and his drive in this way. (also, there's that lesson: if you judge other people, be prepared to find yourself in the same situation) Heh, I often have people ask my why I draw, or why don't I just switch to something else now that my arms are all gimpy. I just want to hand them that paragraph and be all, "I don't know, can you explain this? I can't" Because, really! How the hell does it make ANY sense to work all day, skip out at the risk of loosing your job, drive home at midnight, just to draw and draw some more in a pure frenzy topped with frustration, only to wake up (I'd guess with hardly any sleep) to drive right back to work in the morning. It sounds mad. I can't explain it but, that makes so much sense to me. I think it would make sense to most creative people. If you want to do it, you just... can't help but try to do it. It's like you just HAVE to. It will drive you more mad not to.

Argh! :argh: When will they release Fantasia again! I'm SO SICK OF WAITING!
Do you guys know if there were black centaurs walking with Bacchus like this in the final version of the film? Because, as a kid, I remember thinking that it was a shame that there weren't any African centaurs- that it seemed like a missed opportunity... so I'm just wondering if I was mistaken. (I was just into Zebras. I was also probably a weird kid because I literally remember thinking, at a very early age, that that would have been sexy. Yeah, if I were gay, I have no doubt what I'd find attractive.)
And I just saw this and was all: "Holy crap! ..? Were there?"
Image
And, of course, I was looking up this "question" a few years ago, because my brain is also weird, and I found out about the horror that is Sunflower. At first I thought she was going to be all progressive and hot, like the others, but no. No. NO. Not in the least. So, yeah, were there any less racist ones in the movie? Not that the ones in that concept sketch aren't (at least they're on par with the white ones in the looks department) ..but still. Just wondering.

When I read your post I was instantly reminded of two quotes by Nietzsche:

"Man is the only creature that hast to overcome himself in order to live fully",

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.  If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened.  But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself"

For me this is the plight of the artist. I was similarly comforted by Miyazaki's words, simply knowing that no matter the level of mastery, the struggle to bring out your individual expression, and to resist the crushing societal pressure placed on that expression whether it be economic in nature, or purely social, the struggle remains the same no matter the artists level of mastery.

The reason I find Miyazaki's words comforting, because if that adversarial overcoming is a constant, regardless of a persons level of creative mastery, its no longer something to be feared as something aberrant within my own thinking. That the people I look up to as mentors are not going around in some zen-like-trance 24hrs a day producing masterworks via immaculate conception devoid of the mountain of adversity that I feel like I'm battling against every single day.

Anyway I totally agree with you Melora, and I'm glad that quote by Miyazaki found you.

They are releasing Fantasia again? wasn't there already a DVD or blu-ray release a couple months ago? I still see the copies in stories :?:

Oh yeah, they were, similar to the ones in the concept art for sure:

But that's it.

Yeah, Sunflower is......something that Disney wants to forget about, I have a VHS copy of Fantasia and that part is completely edited out. I doubt it would be in the DVDs/blu-rays either. ^^;

Here is something interesting I found:

Quote:
It was insulting enough for Disney to include the smiling servant stereotype to begin with, but, to make matters worse, they started categorically denying Sunflower's existence with the Fantasia re-release in 1960. How does that possibly make things better? "No, you misunderstand. In our perfect, Fantasia world, Africans aren't servants. They don't f***ing exist."

I wouldn't be surprised if future versions of Fantasia have a couple of the main centaur girls changed to be African, but I don't know if that would be better or worse.
It would be better because there would be more variety (besides the blue/purple and white-skinned girls), but it could be worse....almost like a cover up :erm:

I love Amano's style. Also he was the inspiration of a another japanese artist that made the concept arts of my favorites animes. So I thank him to exist! :D
I also have all the star wars mangas, i'm a fan. :3, H'ss the same artist from an old anime called Corrector Yue.

Amano is crazy. I don't know how the guy can be so loose with his lines, but reign it all in with the most intense eyes, and all that sensuality. The guy is just a master.

If you like Amano you may like Frank Frazetta and Jeffery Jones too. I'll be posting a bunch of his work soon (gotta filter out the NSFW stuff first).

Glad you like it. I'll try and post more.
